Welcome Back to School Kids…

Welcome Back to School Conneaut Monday marked the “end of summer” for hundreds of Conneaut students who poured into the doors of Lakeshore Primary, Gateway Elementary, Conneaut Middle School and Conneaut High School eager to see their friends, meet their teachers and tackle the new challenges that lie ahead.

Prior to Monday’s first day of school.. there was a young boy who was entering Conneaut Middle School fearing embarrassment if he forgot his locker combination or worse couldn’t manage to open the locker… a fourteen year old girl who feared “high school” and would it would really be like – since in her words, “this means she was grown up” and finally a mother whose tears dropped into her morning coffee as she realized her only son was a “big kid” now and her daily routine, now altered as the bus drove down the street.

Fast forward to late afternoon the same day and the sides of  Furnace Road were lined with parents, if you didn’t know any better you would have thought it was a parade route. The parents were glowing with pride as their sons and daughters jumped off the buses and ran to their houses and waiting parents, excited to share all of the things they learned, friends they met and adventures of the day!

I am proud to report that the wonderful staff at Conneaut Middle School was there to ease the anxiety of the young boy and other children who feared facing defeat by the lockers. The fourteen year old girl thinks High School is going to be great and the young child turned “big boy” thinks school buses, book bags and homework is the “coolest thing ever”.

I would say the first day of school was a success overall in the City of Conneaut. I encourage you to take a minute and think back to your first day of elementary school, middle school, high school… all of the things you didn’t know, lessons you learned and fears you conquered through the formative years.

As we enter the 2011-2012 school year, I hope to have the opportunity to be part of the large  ”team”  that builds the foundation for our children’s education, the educational path that they will take to dream, learn and achieve.  I am asking for your vote on November 8th, 2011 to elect myself; Katie Schwartz to the Conneaut Board of Education and one last thing, Welcome back to school kids….

Conneaut Needs Katie…

This week is an exciting week for Conneaut. Another election year is ahead, and I am excited to see that two other Conneaut women have filed their petitions for school board.  When asked the question, “what do you think about the competition”? my response is always the same… I think competition is great. Whether it is in politics or business… competition fuels quality it gives people options and forces those competiting to offer the “best product” they have and maintain that standard of quality.

Tonight, I “officially” launched my new campaign website… http://conneautneedskatie.com  I chose the domain name, because I believe it to be true.  If you agree that Conneaut needs new blood in their leadership, a youthful and energetic team player who is focused on Conneaut’s future… than you agree.. Conneaut needs me, Katie Schwartz.

Over the next 3 months, I will be adding issues and thoughts to this website to help the citizens of Conneaut learn more about the issues important to me, and where I stand on a variety of topics surrounding the Conneaut Schools.

I invite you to share this website with your friends and everyone in Conneaut if you’d like and I ask for your vote on November 8th, 2011 for Conneaut School Board.

What does a School Board Member Do?

Before you hit the polls to cast your vote for the next 3 members of the Conneaut Board of Education… I want to remind the citizens of Conneaut, what the true functions of a school board member are. For some of you, this may be redundant – while for others, you may find that you didn’t know what you were paying for.  Either way, I hope you find this post an insightful reminder, at the very least of the value and importance that members of the Conneaut Board of Education bring to the citizens of Conneaut.

School Boards (aka a Board of Education) are made up of elected officials, the elected officials agree to take on the task, acting as public servents performing a community service to not only present and former students, parents and educators but also the greater Conneaut Community.  What do they do? Once elected, all of the members act as a “board”, a uniform body to perform the following tasks:

  • Set Educational Goals
  • Establish Policy for the School System (based upon state laws and community values)
  • Employ a Superintendent and Treasurer
  • Hold the Superintendent and Treasurer responsible for managing the district in accordance with board policies

According to the Ohio School Boards Association, School Boards are also responsible for “being good fiscal stewards; acting in the best interest of the school district and within the scope of their legal authority”.

School Board Members play a vital role in every community, as they serve as the link between the school system and the public. It is extremely important that YOUR elected officials possess the ability to communicate effectively with the community they serve and help to build public support and understanding of the importance of public education.

As a candidate in the upcoming election, If elected I want to use my superior communication skills and marketing/business background to improve communication between the public and the Conneaut Board of Education, while preserving the tradition of excellence and positive teamwork that the Conneaut Board of Education has showcased in the past.
